The Engine | Part - 2 | Advancements

INTRODUCTION:-

Earlier we saw how an Engine works. What are the different parts of it and its functions? If you haven't checked it yet, then click here.

Today we will discuss the advancement made in the engine. All of us know about 2-stroke and 4-stroke engines, but only a few of them are aware of a 6-stroke engine.

So let's begin...

WHAT IS A 6-STROKE ENGINE? WHAT IS PERFORMED AFTER THE 4th-STROKE, i.e, EXHAUST STROKE?

The 6-stroke engine was founded by Leonard Dyer in 1915. This engine can be used for better mileage and less emission.

The strokes in this type of engine are as follows;-

  1. Suction Stroke
  2. Combustion Stroke
  3. Power Stroke
  4. Exhaust Stroke
  5. Air / Water Suction Stroke
  6. Air / Water Exhaust Stroke
The types of valve engine consist of:-

  1. Ar/Fuel Intake Valve
  2. Air/Water only Intake Valve
  3. Combustion Exhaust Valve
  4. Air/Water only Exhaust Valve

WORKING:-

1} Intake Stroke:-

In this stroke, the air-fuel mixture is permitted into the cylinder where later on it will be compressed and burnt.

2} Compression Stroke:-

In this stroke, the air-fuel mixture is compressed to increase its pressure and temperature.

3} Power Stroke:-

The compressed mixture is then burnt with the help of a spark generated by a spark plug.

4} Exhaust Stroke:-

The burnt gas is then sent or exhausted out of the cylinder in $th stroke through the exhaust valve.

5} Air/Water Intake Stroke:-

After the burnt gases are exhausted, the air/water intake valve is opened and the air/water flows into the cylinder. This stroke is performed to cool down the temperature of the engine cylinder.

6} Air/Water Exhaust Stroke:-

The hot air/water is then sent out and hence the cycle is repeated.

4-STROKE VS 6-STROKE:-

DOHC (DOUBLE OVERHEAD CAMSHAFT):-

DOHC engines were introduced to increase volumetric efficiency, power and run at high speed.

The main benefit of DOHC is that it provides 4 valves per cylinder. Each camshaft operates two valves, one will control intake valves and another will handle the exhaust valve.

By using four-valve it is possible to allow more amount of air into and out of the cylinder, which is the main advantage of the DOHC engine.

Hence more air-fuel mixture means more power.

This type is the engine is mostly used in F1 and racing cars. I've also written a blog on F1 car breakdown, go check it out if you haven't then click here.

WHICH ONE'S BETTER, SOHC OR DOHC?

SOHC engine produces a better torque than that of DOHC with the same number of valves because SOHC engine are lighter than DOHC engines.

But DOHC can produce more power than that of the SOHC.

Therefore both of them are used according to the requirements. DOHC for more power and SOHC for better torque.
