The vegan-friendly approach will kick off with the C40 Recharge EV.
Volvo plans to have a full line of completely leather-free electric vehicles by 2030. Beginning with the Volvo C40 Recharge, Volvo will only offer its EVs with premium interiors sourced from sustainable materials. Volvo is taking a stand for animal welfare rights, which the Swedish automaker describes as a step in the right direction to reduce the use of materials that contain animal products.
Looking to become a fully circular business by 2040, all new Volvo models will use 25 percent recycled and bio-based content by 2025. Instead of leather upholstery, Volvo will offer buyers eco-friendly options such as Nordico, a new interior made from PET bottles, bio-attributed material, and recycled corks. A new benchmark for premium interior design, Nordico interiors will debut in the next generation of Volvo models.
Ensuring full traceability and animal welfare in its wool supply chain, Volvo will continue to offer wool blend options from suppliers that are certified to source responsibly. Part of Volvo's climate action strategy is for all immediate suppliers to use 100 percent renewable energy, including third parties that supply materials. Volvo also wants to reduce the utilization of residual products from livestock production, be it part of the material itself or the process chemical.
Volvo's efforts to produce leather-free EVs by 2030 are rooted in the negative environmental impacts of cattle farming and deforestation. The bulk of global greenhouse gas emissions come from cattle farming, with livestock responsible for an estimated 14 percent. Taking a firm stance and actively replacing animal-based materials, Volvo aims to help stop animal cruelty.
