Maserati's new GranTurismo coupe and GranCabrio convertible sports cars will introduce a new electric powertrain when the redesigned coupe arrives next year. The Italian automaker has begun testing prototypes of the new car, and the first images show that the new model will have a similar design language as the new MC20 mid-engine sports car.

The front-engine GranTurismo has a similar shape as the previous generation, with a long hood and sloped roofline common of grand tourers. Its long, vertical headlights look similar to the new MC20's, and its low-mounted grille features vertical slats with the Maserati logo in the middle. The prototype shown has a set of aero wheels and an overhead photo shows a chrome-tipped exhaust, suggesting that this is not the fully electric variant. Maserati has also said that a GranCabrio convertible model will be added about a year after the debut of the coupe.
Maserati hasn't shared many details on its first electric powertrain, but it has been testing it since early last year. We expect the new electric GranTurismo and GranCabrio to be quicker than the old model, which reached 60 mph in the mid-four-second range in Car and Driver testing. Maserati says that the new cars will also have gasoline-engine offerings, and we expect it could offer either a hybrid or a plug-in-hybrid powertrain. The previous-generation GranTurismo used a 4.7-liter V-8 engine.
