Mercedes AMG released its plan for the future. Being in the era of 'EV', the AMG is also moving toward the electrification of its cars. A lot of upgrades have been discussed in this article read till the end to know full details of the step taken by the AMG towards a better future.

Torque Electric Motors have been playing a major role in enhancing the performance of the car either directly or boosting the gas engine to a new height. Mercedes AMG has also used this technique to enhance its V8s by Mercedes-Benz, in which plug-in hybrids or battery vehicles will be the options

The electrification of the powertrain plays a central role, Phillip Schiemer, CEO of Mercedes-AMG.  The future line-up will have four cylinders and V8s to be paired with electric motors to boost its performance and an all-electric will be provided under the Mercedes-EQ brand.

The first pure EV, Mercedes EQS, will be seen this year later. Also, the technology E-Performance will be introduced with V8 in Mercedes-AMG GT 4-door coupe, this year later. The electrified version of Mercedes-AMG C-Class with 4-cylinder, which will be as powerful as the current C63 which has a twin-turbo V8 engine and will be seen later this year. The plug-in hybrids by Mercedes-AMG with electric motors and high-performance battery developed in Affalterbach, as well as the brand's SUV 4-matic+ all-wheel-drive system.

The big Torque Power:

The electrified versions of AMG models will have over 800hp and 728 lb-ft of torque. The electric motors will provide up to 201 hp and 236 lb-ft of the toque to the gasoline car, assuming a V8 cylinder. This combined will provide a sprint of 0-60 mph in less than 3.0 secs.

These upcoming hybrids are described as the 'ambassadors of the new era in the performance segment' of the 43 and 53 series AMG model. In the case of the GT variant (also known as GT73), the figures exceed 630 hp in the current GT73 S.

So, how motors are combined with the engine?

The AMG's E-Performance hybrid system will be using in-house hardware and software. The cars will consist engine providing power to the front wheels and electric motors powering rear wheels but can shift energy to the front wheels in-case of slippery roads.

By putting the motors directly onto the rear axle and not in between the engine and transmission system helps in weight balancing and converts the power more directly into propulsion for an extra boost to the acceleration during pick-up.

The high-performance battery has been developed by AMG inspired by Formula 1 car engine, with twice the power density of conventional drive batteries, said Mercedes CTO, Jochen Hermann.

The four-cylinder Hybrid System for C-Class:-

The electric motor is paired with a 2.0 liter turbocharged L4 which has been used transversely in the subcompact 45 series AMG.  The l-4 is fixed with an electric turbocharger which comes directly from Formula 1 and is also used in Project One hypercar.

The electric motor is mounted onto the shaft of the turbocharger for rapid power build-up. The electric turbocharger is small but packs the power of a large blower,

The combined output of the engine and motor will be around 643 hp (442 from the engine and 201 from the engine), which means the next-gen c-class will have more power output than the current entry-level V8 (469hp and 503 hp in S models).

V8 Plug-in Hybrid for AMG:-

AMG developed a hybrid system that will be paired with the 4.0 litre twin-turbo V8 engine with 8-speed transmission positioned at front wheels. The electric drive unit with 150kw of power is attached to the rear axle and has a two-speed transmission and can be shifted electrically into second gear at about 87mph for optimal use of power.

Also, an electronically controlled rear-axle slip differential is attached which will distribute torque to each wheel as needed. The three are combined in a compact unit, know as the P3 hybrid, work well for the sports cars and performance model. The 400-volt battery is also included at the rear, above the rear axle.

New Assembly line:-

Mercedes also announced that an additional production line will be set-up for high-performance 4-cylinder engines which will also be used in a plug-in hybrid, at Affalterbach. The line will continue to follow, one-man, one-engine principle.

Updates on Project One Hypercar:-

The deliveries of the Mercedes AMG Project One Hypercar will start this fall and continue through 2022. There will be 1275 cars to be built in total and will have Formula 1 engine for the roads.
